The Hidden Cost of Making Your Customers Think Too Hard.

Why simplicity is one of the most powerful business tools
Here's a little design secret: sometimes the best thing a designer can do is take something away.
A button that doesn't need to be there. A paragraph that says the same thing twice. A confusing menu. Another colour, another font or another clever design element.
It's tempting to think that adding more information makes your website more useful. But there's a point where more becomes less.
And your customers shouldn't have to work hard to understand your business.
Every extra decision creates friction
Imagine visiting a website and being confronted with twelve different menu options. You want to find out what a company does, but its homepage is filled with jargon, competing messages and endless paragraphs.
Do you persevere?
Probably not.
People generally want to find information quickly, understand their options and know what to do next.
When a website makes that unnecessarily difficult, visitors can lose interest.
Less isn't always less
Simplicity doesn't mean stripping away personality or making everything look bland.
It's about giving important information room to breathe.
A well-designed website guides visitors naturally. Clear headings explain what's on offer. Thoughtful layouts establish priorities. Good typography makes information easier to digest.
Every element has a purpose.
The same applies to printed materials. A brochure doesn't need to tell someone absolutely everything about your business. It needs to communicate the right things in the right order.
Try looking at your business through your customers' eyes
Can someone understand what you offer within a few seconds?
Can they find the information they're looking for without hunting around?
Is it obvious how to contact you?
If the answer is no, perhaps the solution isn't adding more content. It might be removing some.
My approach to design has always been simple: clear, creative and effective. Because making things easier for your customers is good for business.
If your website or marketing materials are working harder than they need to, perhaps it's time for a rethink.
